Strongly denouncing the detention of her party's acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia alleged Tuesday that the government has been on an arrest spree across the country, reports UNB.
In a statement, she said, "After confining me to my political office, the current illegal and fascist government has arrested my party's secretary general as it has been on a massive arrest drive all over the country."
She alleged that not only the opposition men but also the common people have got panicked due to the police action.
Khaleda Zia said the government has intensified its repression on people misusing the law enforcers as it has lost people support. "I call upon people to be vocal against all undemocratic activities of the illegal and unrepresentative government," she said.
Khaleda Zia demanded the government release the BNP acting secretary general and all other political prisoners after withdrawing all the 'false cases' filed against them.
Plainclothes police picked up BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Tuesday afternoon as he came out of the Jatiya Press Club after nearly 25 hours of stay there.
In another statement, Khaleda also denounced the arrest of ETV chairman Abdus Salam and demanded the government release him immediately.
