Khaleda pays Tk 3.3m tax under NBR amnesty

Wednesday, 1 August 2007

Immediate-past Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has paid Tk 3.3 million (33 lakh) out of total Tk 3.0 billion (300 crore) the National Board of Revenue has bagged in tax so far under an amnesty offered to tax-dodgers to get their undisclosed money legalised, reports UNB.
A senior NBR official confirmed Tuesday evening that Khaleda Zia, earlier notified by the anti-graft body for submitting her wealth statement, declared her money today by paying Tk 3.3 million as tax.
"She directly deposited the money with the Bangladesh Bank and sent a copy of her statement to the NBR through courier service today," he said.
Khaleda Zia, one of the two former prime ministers now passing through serious tribulations amid a political purge in the interim period, is among those who availed of the last-minute chance before the expiry of the amnesty.
About the maintained proceedings of the BNP chairperson to declare her untaxed money legal, he said, there is nothing illegal about this type of payment -- anyone can do this.
But he declined to give details about Khaleda's total untaxed money declared Tuesday.
NBR sources confirmed that the total declared untaxed money would be no less than Tk 13.2 million.
A total of 8,559 people availed of the opportunity to whiten what government revenue authority brands as black money.
Their incomes whitened till today (Tuesday) amounted to Tk 16.22 billion, a senior NBR official told the news agency.
