MUNSHIGANJ, Dec 21 (BSS): BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia Sunday said that if voted to power again her government will construct the Padma Bridge at Mawa point and supply gas to Munshiganj.
She made the pledges while addressing a huge election rally in support of BNP candidate Shah Moazzam Hossain at Srinagar Stadium in the morning.
Khaleda said the country suffered a lot in last two years after the January 22, 2007 election was "foiled through conspiracies."
She urged the people to vote for the BNP-led four-party alliance in the forthcoming election to restore democracy and ensure development of the country.
The BNP chief said her party had worked for development and welfare of the people in the past and it will do so in future too.
Measures will be taken to reduce prices of essentials, provide the farmers with fertilisers, seeds and other agriculture inputs at subsidised rates, and generate employment for the youths, she pledged.
Khaleda introduced Shah Moazzem Hossain as the BNP candidate by presenting poll symbol 'sheaf of paddy' to him amidst applause from the jubilant people. "The 'sheaf of paddy' is the symbol of development, production and development," she said.
In his address, Shah Moazzem presented a number of local demands to the former PM, including setting up of a university after the name of scientist Jagadish Chandra.
Earlier, BNP chairperson left her Shaheed Mainul Road residence in the capital at 9:30am Sunday for Barisal.
On her way between Dhaka and Munshiganj, she was greeted by a large number of people at different points.
Supporters of BNP candidate from Dhaka-4 Abdul Hai greeted the BNP chief near the Buriganga Bridge while the supporters of Gayeshwar Chandra Roy at Rajendrapur and Abdullahpur in Keranaiganj, and the supporters of Shah Moazzem Hossain at Kulia crossing and Nimtali bus stand in Munshiganj.
They chanted slogans and waved placards, banners and festoons standing on both sides of the roads. Khaleda also responded by waving hands.
The BNP chairperson is scheduled to address an election rally at Barisal Circuit House ground Sunday afternoon and carry out poll campaigns in adjoining constituencies before retuning to Dhaka at night.
