Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday was sued for defaming Bangabandhu with her claim about the first President of Bangladesh and issuing a threat while addressing a programme in the city. AB Siddiqui, president of Jononetri Parishad, a pro-Awami League organisation, filed the lawsuit with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shamsul Arifin’s court in the morning. The hearing of the case has been scheduled at 11am, plaintiff lawyer Rawshan Ara Shikder said in the morning. She said the former prime minister was sued for defaming Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with her remarks which she made at a programme on March 27 regarding BNP founder and late president Ziaur Rahman’s presidency. At the programme, Khaleda, widow of late President Zia, claimed that her husband Ziaur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh and was the first president of the country, Rawshan Ara said, according to a news agency.
