Khaleda terms govt tax proposals illegal

Wednesday, 11 June 2008

Detained former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia Tuesday termed illegal the budget and tax proposals by the caretaker government according to Article 83 of the Constitution, reports UNB.

Talking to her lawyers during consultations at a special court, she said the Article says no tax shall be levied or collected except by or under the authority of an act of parliament.

Khaleda, who appeared before the court in connection with GATCO scam case, again asked the caretaker administration to immediately lift the state of emergency, and quickly hold parliamentary polls.

Expressing concern over the spiraling price-hike of essentials, she demanded introduction of rationing system particularly for rice and pulse.

She also asked the government to arrange treatment of her two sons - Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman Koko - abroad.
