Khaleda's release likely in a week
Saturday, 14 June 2008
The government may release the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in a week's time and send Koko abroad for treatment, reports UNB.
However, there are some hesitations within the government circles about sending Tarique abroad.
On its part, the government has taken another step forward by initiating the process of reviewing the stringent Emergency Power Rules (EPR), following the release of Awami League (AL) chief Sheikh Hasina from jail for an eight-week period. There are some thinking in the government to amend Section 15 of the EPR, introducing bail provision for an accused arrested in EPR case.
Smaller political groups like Dr Kamal Hossain's Gano Forum and Ferdous Ahmed Qureshis' newly floated Progressive Democratic Party were critical of the government's current steps.
Dr Kamal at a meeting of the Jubo Forum Friday wanted to know who "are the intruders in the caretaker government trying to amend the law to release the hardcore criminals and corrupts."
At a news conference Friday Qureshi also questioned how Sheikh Hasina could be released and how the Chief Adviser could talk to her over telephone and how the four Advisers could hold meeting at Sudha Sadan.
Despite these cynical views, people at large, however, look happy over the current political developments that might contribute to creating an environment congenial to holding free, fair and credible elections.
Some analysts say the leadership of big parties must show their political maturity at this turning point of the country's polity.
The big parties must shrug off their old political culture and values, and should reach understanding among themselves and with the government on issues of vital national interest to steer the nation forward.
