Khaleda's support for Delwar had gusty impact on Saifur-led BNP

Saturday, 16 February 2008

Detained BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's categorical support Thursday for her appointed secretary general Khondoker Delwar Hossain seemingly had a gusty impact on pro-reformist BNP led by former Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman, reports UNB.
Khaleda, through her counsels, conveyed a message to the party that the October 29 standing committee meeting that nominated M Saifur Rahman as acting chairperson and Hafizuddin Ahmed the acting secretary general was illegal.
She also wrote an open letter to the Election Commission that BNP secretary general Khondoker Delwar Hossain, appointed by her on September 2 last year, would represent BNP at any dialogue.
In the latest turn of events in the uneasy political arena, the BNP chairperson communicated her decision through her two attorneys --Barrister Nawshad Zamir and Adv Sanaullah Mia -- who met her at the makeshift jail Thursday evening.
After Khaleda's decision, pro-reform BNP leaders either preferred to keep mum for the time being or avoided any comment to the press at this moment.
Presidium member Saifur Rahman is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital while Hafizuddin Ahmed, who returned to the capital from his hometown of Bhola, did not like to talk about it citing his travel fatigue.
Standing Committee member Mofazzal Karim declined to comment before discussing the matter with his party's senior colleagues. Several former MPs, who sided with Saifur-Hafiz, also did not like to make any comment.
