'Khanak' resumes dredging at Ctg Port channel

CHITTAGONG, Mar 23: Following a seven-month long break, the dredger 'Khanak' of the Chittagong Port (CP), resumed excavation of the port channel Friday.
Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Chairman Commodore M Faruque inaugurated the task.
Speaking on the occasion, CPA chairman said the rate of growth of handling export and import of the goods at the CP range from 12 per cent to 14 percent which is double than the rate of the GDP growth.
He said, following the caretaker government's assuming of state power, the Joint Forces started working for improving the efficiency and productivity of the CP.
At the same time, the CPA was able to take a number of reform measures which included elimination of container congestions, upgrading the standard of services, enhancing infrastructural facilities and managing the problem of the workers.
Regarding dredging programme, the CPA chairman said in order to preserve the navigability of the Karnaphuli channel, dredging has been carried out since the launching of the port.
He said 'Khanak' has been built using French technology and is capable of dredging 8,000 million tonnes of soil daily. It has also helped to enhance the dredging capacity of the port remarkably.
