Khandaker Mahbub sent to jail

A Dhaka court has sent BNP Chairperson’s adviser Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain to jail rejecting both bail and remand petitions in a case filed for vandalism and attack on police. Judge M Rezaul Karim of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court passed the order after a hearing on remand petition by investigating officer (IO) of the case DB inspector Fazlul Rahman and the bail petition of Khandaker Mahbub, also vice chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council. Khandaker Mahbub’s lawyer Sanaullah Mia earlier submitted a bail petition before the court and sought the rejection of police remand. Moving the petition, Sanaullah Mia said it is illegal that the IO of the case sought a seven-day remand showing Khandaker Mahbub in a case, although the High Court earlier asked the police to refrain from further harassing the BNP leader without due process of law. On January 22, police sought seven-day remand of Mahbub Hossain in the case. The case was filed with Ramna police station on March 2 last year against 28 BNP leaders, including Khandaker Mahbub on charges of vandalising vehicles, blasting bombs and preventing police from discharging duties during a demonstration on the day, according to UNB.
