KHULNA, Dec 10: About half a million workers of nine state-owned jute mills in Khulna and Jashore districts have begun their fast unto death from Tuesday noon
Sources said, on Tuesday noon, workers from Crescent, Platinum, Daulatpur, Khalishpur, Dighalia, Alim, Eastern, Carpeting and JJI Jute mill gathered at their respective mill gates without going to their working places. They then began hunger strike unto death at their respective mill gates.
Mill workers say the state-owned jute mill workers have been paid Tk 1.0 billion for payment of arrears, but their main demand was the implementation of the wage commission. Until this demand is met, the workers will not return to their homes.
Biniz Uddin Mia, a liaison officer of the BJMC's Khulna Zone, said the entire information of jute mills in Khulna region had been sent to the BJMC. Payments will be made periodically subject to availability of funds.
