
Khulna-Mongla port rail link on way

KHULNA, Apr 25: The process of long cherished Khulna to Mongla port rail line has been started. RFP (Request For Proposal) has been called from six organisations with the last date fixed on May 15. Of them, one organisation will get the work feasibility study and design. Besides, land acquisition will start next financial year, railway sources said. Sources said that the people of this region has been demanding for a rail line between Khulna and Mongla port for long time. At last the present government has taken a plan to establish the rail line. In this connection, a project for a 53-kilometre rail line at a cost of Tk 17.021 billion has been approved in a ECNEC meeting held on December 21, 2010. The railway source said that a pre-proposal meeting on RFP document was held at Rail Bhaban on January 17 and called for EOI. Nine organisations took part in this project. A senior Engineer of Bangladesh Railway said that after selection the RFP would spend five months for feasibility study, three months for detailed design and 24 months for construction and supervision. Sources also said that the 53-kilometre rail line would cross some Upazillas of Khulna and Bagerhat district and cross the Bhairab, Atharobeki and Atrai River. River digging protested Another message adds: A human chain was formed in protest against the digging of the river affecting the houses of landless people allocated by the government on the char of Balesware river bordering Bagerhat - Pirojpur district. The human chain programme was held on Sunday noon and a memorandum was also submitted to the Prime Minister through Kachua Upazila Parishad of Bagerhat district. The members of the landless people suggested to dig the river from its original location. They said that such a move will render thousands of landless and Shahid Muktijoddha families homeless. They also demand that to stop digging the river until settlement of the border dispute of Bagerhat-Pirojpur district.
