Kidnap king of the Padma
Monday, 10 August 2009
RECENTLY there was a piece of news in the papers that shocked me, not that other reports of the criminals and their world are less shocking but this one was shocking because our law enforcers seem to get quite near the kidnap kingpin and even arrest his close cohorts but the main man manages to slip through their fingers each time. So far our law enforcers have done a commendable job in not only nabbing many associates of the man but also rescuing many of the kidnapped. They have tried hard to get to the main hideout of the kidnapper but so far their activities have yielded no positive results, although they are confident that they will soon get their man.
The man's name is Salam Mollah and he is said to have become a billionaire and he has made all that loot mostly from ransom money. Salam's targets are mostly the sons of the rich for whom he uses beautiful girls-the classic bait for impressionable young men who can not stay away from attractive young women who snare them with promises of a good time. Needless to say that the time they get is harrowing and some even learn their lesson, but lesson learnt or not, Mollah by then has become richer by a few million.
The man's nest and area of operations include the vast and un-policed char areas of the Padma (but not the moon where our law enforcers cannot reach). Mollah also has major shares in looting of movable property including cattle, hijacking of crops, banditry and whatever criminal activity may take his fancy. His large force of thugs keeps this criminal machine running so to say. After the spate of arrests for a while, Mollah lay low and nothing was heard of him but then after a while he has started his activities again. The ransom for a single kidnapping, by the way, sometimes reaches as much as Tk 5.0 million (50 lakh). Let us hope our law enforcers finally get to end the activities of this criminal soon.
