An alleged kidnapper was killed and his three associates were injured in lynch mob attack in Sitakunda Upazila in Chittagong district on Tuesday afternoon. Police quoting witnesses said, locals caught the four while they were forcing a man into their microbus at Madam Bibir Hat and gave them a good beating, leaving them seriously injured. The mob also torched the vehicle. The injured were rescued and admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where Tofazzal, 40, succumbed to his injuries around 5:20pm, said constable Shilabrata Barua of CMCH Police Camp. Two others were named as Md Belayet, 35, and Enamul, 37, while the identity of the fourth could not be known, said, Mohammad Shahidullah, additional superintendent of police (Chittagong north zone). He said that one Jahir Uddin was returning home by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw after withdrawing an amount of money from his account at Colonel Hat branch of Islami Bank in the port city. The four followed him with a microbus, he said, adding, when the auto-rickshaw reached Madam Bibir Hat on Chittagong-Dhaka Highway, the microbus intercepted the auto-rickshaw. Introducing themselves as members of the Detective Branch of police, they tried to force him into the microbus, said the additional SP, adding hearing his screams, locals besieged the microbus and started beating the four. The locals also set fire to the microbus, he said, adding police later rescued the four and rushed them to the CMCH. Vehicular movement on the Chittagong-Dhaka Highway remained suspended for around 1 hour at that time. Interestingly, Jahir went missing after the incident. ‘We are trying to know his position,’ said Shahidullah, according to a news agency.
