Kidney ailment a silent killer: MA Malek

Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Brig Gen (retd) MA Malek Monday termed the kidney disease as a 'silent killer' and urged all concerned to make the people aware of the disease, reports BSS.
"Around 15 per cent people of the country are suffering from kidney ailment," he said, "but most people of the country are unaware and it has serious lack of treatment facilities."
He was speaking at a function on the occasion of draw of the first phase of Kidney Foundation Lottery-2008 at Diploma Engineers' Institute in the city.
There is a good scope in the country to build kidney- specialised hospitals under the partnership of public and private sectors like joint venture initiatives taken for treatment of cardiac, diabetes, cancer and other diseases, he said.
The Special Assistant assured that the government would provide all support for the private promoters in building kidney hospitals in the country.
With chairman of Kidney Foundation Professor Dr Harun-ar-Rashid in the chair, the function was addressed, among others, by Managing Director of the Sonali Bank Ltd. SA Chowdhury, President of Bangladesh Shishu Shwastho Foundation National Professor Dr M R Khan, Chief Adviser of ATN-Bangla Saiful Bari and Secretary of the Kidney Foundation Prof Dr Mohibur Rahman.
Gen Malek praised the initiative for establishing a kidney hospital in Mirpur and urged the philanthropists to extend their support to the project.
Other speakers said about 20 million kidney patients are there in the country with 40,000 new patients coming in the row every year. Of them, 38,000 poor patients die without treatment due to high treatment cost.
They urged the government and all concerned to reduce the treatment cost of kidney diseases and urged the affluent section of the society to come forward in this regard.
In the lottery draw, ticket number Ga-219232 won the first prize of Taka 25 lakh while ticket number Uma-237832 and ticket number Kha-318015 won the second prize of Taka 3 lakh and third prize of Taka 55,000 respectively.
