KL keen to invest in infrastructure sectors

CHITTAGONG, Apr 28: The visiting Malaysian business team has expressed their keen interested in investing in infrastructure sectors like tourism, highway operation and management and water treatment plant in Bangladesh.
The members of the eight-member team expressed this while exchanging views with the chairman of the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) and directors of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) here today.
The team headed by Mr Othman Razali comprises of leaders of Malaysian South-South Association (MASSA), Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM).
President of the Bangladesh-Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BMCCI) Syed Moazzem Hossain accompanied the team.
During the meeting, CDA Chairman Abdus Salam placed three proposals before the team: a) Flyover with elevated expressway from Dewanhat to Chittagong Airport, b) tunnel under the river Karnafuli near Patenga, both on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis and c) planned housing for 1000 families on public-private partnership (PPP) basis.
Miss NG Su Fun, deputy leader of the team, said they were happy to see the investment atmosphere in the port city and were eager to invest in some major infrastructure sectors here.
She said their current mission was a fact finding one and they would have further exchange of views on the CDA's proposals in near future.
CDA Secretary Kamal Reza, Deputy Secretary Amal Guha and Deputy Chief Town Planner Shahinul Islam Khan were present at the meeting.
The president of the BMCCI said the exports from Bangladesh to Malaysia doubled in the last three years. In 2007 Bangladesh exported goods worth US$16 million to Malaysia while the same stands at $32 million today.
Mr Razali in his address to the directors of the CCCI said his construction company CIDB was very much interested in investing in the construction and management of road, highway and power plants in Bangladesh.
