Kolkata’s Mohammedan Sporting Club beat Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club 4-3 in a tiebreaker to win the 118th IFA Shield Saturday.
Stipulated 90 minutes play at the final at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan in Salt Lake City, Kolkata, ended in a 1-1 draw.
Sheikh Jamal’s Haiti forward Sony Norde put the visitors ahead in the 27th minute scoring from a free kick.
Mehrajuddin Wadoo scored the equalizer for Mohammedan Sporting just before the halftime. The second half and the 30 extra minutes remained goalless.
Both teams had chances to win the game in regulation time. Each side was reduced to ten in the second half after an altercation between Norde and Luciano Sobrosa saw both players sent off by referee Santosh Kumar.
Two spectacular saves by Mohammedan’s substitute goalkeeper Naseem Akhtar in the shootout handed the 123-year-old club their second trophy of the season, according to a news agency.
