Kushtia bidi workers press for five-pt demand

Bidi workers and tobacco farmers formed a human chain in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Kushtia on Wednesday to press home their five-point demand, says a press release.
Their demands include introducing six-day work week, reducing tax on bidi, withdrawal of 10 per cent advance income tax on the bidi industry, fixing fair price of tobacco and carrying out drives against unauthorised bidi factories.
Golam Mostafa, labour affairs secretary of the Kushtia district unit Awami League, spoke as the chief guest at the programme presided over by Md Nazim Uddin, general secretary of Kushtia Zila Bidi Sangram Parishad.
Dr Amir Hossain Bachchu, president of Kushtia district chapter of Tanti League, was present at the human chain programme as a special guest.
Bangladesh Bidi Workers Federation joint secretary Md Harik Hossain and its publicity secretary Shamim Islam, among others, also spoke on the occasion.
