KUSHTIA, Nov 23: The small tannery businessmen are in great trouble as the price has been dropped of both cow and goat hides in the district. A huge number of unsold raw hides has been stored in different shops at Aruapara in the town, hub of raw skin in the district.
According to sources, the tannery owners' association has set prices of Tk 55 to 60 per square foot for cow hide of Dhaka and Tk 45 to 50 for cow hide and Tk 25 to 30 for goat hide of outside Dhaka.
The tannery businessmen of Kushtia tried to follow the guide line of tannery association but the seasonal businessmen did not follow the guide line of tannery association. They purchased cow and goat hides at high rate. According to them the purchasing rate was Tk 80 to 90 for cow hide and Tk 40 to 30 for goat hide and they collected skins from different houses with the hope of good profit.
On the other hand, the wholesalers who supply hides to the tanneries also expressed their hope to make good profit this year after a slump in the last year.
A wholesaler Zia said, 'we will suffer a huge loss if the tannery association maintains slow go policy. Since the seasonal businessmen do not know the real price they have purchased hides at a high rate. As a result we are feeling fear of substantial losses'. He also said, the Kushtia tannery is famous in the country. That is why it has great demand in the market. So, he urged the authority to take measure against the seasonal businessmen to run the business smoothly.
