Labour leaders demand wage board for workers

Sunday, 1 November 2009

FE Report
Labour leaders have urged the government to constitute a national minimum wage board for the workers in the country.
They made the demand at a consultation meeting in the city Saturday with the president of the parliamentary standing committee on labour and employment ministry for materialising their demand of forming wage board and issuing of appointment letters along with identity cards.
"Many factories do not issue appointment letter and even identity card," Amirul Hoque Amin, convener of Bangladesh Garments Sramik Oikya Parishad (BGSOP), said.
The factory owners take the opportunity of non-issuance of appointment letter and fire the workers without any notice, he said adding the owners also suddenly close factories without paying the workers' wages.
"The government should immediately form a wage board considering the present price hike of essentials," Amin said.
The wage should be increased to Tk 5000 from Tk 1662 as the prices of all essentials increased enormously.
"All the garment factories should provide appointment letter at the time of employing any worker," Md Israfil Alam, president of the parliamentary standing committee on labour and employment ministry said.
He also called upon the leaders of the BGSOP to collect data about the factories that did not issue appointment letters and identity cards to workers.
If the authority failed to restart the closed factories, they must provide legal compensation with all dues, Mr Israfil Alam said.
