Labour unrest in UMC Jute Mill
Wednesday, 15 August 2007
NARSINGDI, Aug 14 (UNB): Over 2,000 workers of the UMC Jute Mill, the largest jute mill of the country, demonstrated on the mill premises this (Tuesday) morning, demanding their outstanding salaries and allowances.
Witnesses said the workers, mostly of the morning shift, gathered in front of their general manager's office and tried to ransack it.
They chanted various slogans against the management alleging that over 4,000 workers of the mill did not get their medical allowances for the last 14 months and their salaries for the last 10 weeks.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The workers later got back to their work at the request of the law enforcers.
At noon, another 2,000 workers of the second shift came out of the mill and gave the authorities seven days to clear their outstanding salaries and allowances.
CBA leader Anwar Hossain told the news agency that they would launch a tough movement if their arrears were not paid within the given time.
