CHITTAGONG, Feb 07: The readymade garments (RMG) entrepreneurs said the sector experienced negative growth in export over the last seven months against the current fiscal year's RMG export target of $17.6 billion due to production loss for labour unrest, global economic meltdown and lack of policy and financial support from the government.
They were speaking at a seminar arranged by the BGMEA Chittagong region yesterday on 'Increasing exports through skilled development', 'Productivity & quality: imperative for growth sustainability' and 'Market access & product diversification' on the closing day of three-day CAFAXPO-2010 exposition at Chittagong Club auditorium.
BNP leader and former commerce minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said, "The country is now at the crossroads. The business people are concerned about regular strike, arson and violence. It is high time we stand above all political affiliations and work together for our survival".
He said that the government must own these daily affects. He alleged that political decisions now override economic decision. "I would request the government to take the course of 'economic decisions override political decisions", he said.
Chairman of parliamentary standing committee on industries Tofael Ahmed said the RMG sector needs attention of the government since it is contributing a lot to our commerce and industry apart from giving employment to millions of unskilled workers.
Presided over by BGMEA president Abdus Salam Murshedy, the seminar was also addressed by parliamentary standing committee on Textile & Jute Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury, BGMEA first vice president Nasiruddin and vice president Faruk Hasan.
Dr. Dietrich Stotz, programme coordinator of GTZ-Progress, Gautam Mukherjee, senior consultant of Technopak and Khondaker Golam Moazzem, senior research fellow of CPD presented the keynote papers in the seminar.
The three-day textile and apparel exposition concluded last evening with Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury speaking as the chief guest.
