Labour\\\'s John Biggs named new Tower Hamlets mayor
Friday, 12 June 2015
Labour Party's John Biggs has become the mayor of London borough Tower Hamlets after the election of the previous mayor was declared void.
The returning officer declared him the winner on Friday, tweets from the Tower Hamlets administration said.
“Returning officer duly elects John BIGGS as Mayor of Tower Hamlets #THVotes”
“John BIGGS (LAB) secured 27,255 1st preference votes and 5,499 2nd preference votes. He secured a total of 32,754 votes.#THVotes”
The council elections were held under tight security on Thursday, as there was evidence of large-scale rigging in the previous polls.
Last year, he had lost to independent Lutfur Rahman, who was convicted of electoral fraud by a UK court and told to stand down in April. Rahman was also banned from seeking fresh election.
Rubina Khan, a former member of Lutfur Rahman's Tower Hamlets First Party, received a total of 26,384 votes, including second preferences, while Conservative Peter Golds finished third with 5,940.
