Lack of open spaces in Dhaka

Tuesday, 27 November 2018

Unplanned urbanisation has left only a few parks in a number of residential areas as open spaces in Dhaka city. Around the '80s and '90s, children could get out of the four walls of their homes to go to the nearby field and play with other children of their neighbourhood. This is how they made friends. But such a situation is rare in Dhaka these days.
Children and young people of Dhaka are now living sedentary lives. They seek entertainment through mobile games and internet. But physical activities and sports are very important for human health.
I remember when I was a child there was plenty of open spaces. My friends and I engaged in one form of sports or the other every day. My school had two playgrounds. Now-a-days, most schools in Dhaka do not have their own fields. Students have no space to play. This is hampering their physical and mental growth. And at the rate at which prices of land are increasing in Dhaka, remaining open spaces may also vanish in the near future.
The civil society and government should come up with solutions to this problem soon.
