RAJSHAHI, Sept 16: Government is being deprived of Tk 3.5 million per month in revenue as no provision has been made for loading and unloading of goods on the trains while renovating the Rajshahi railway station after demolishing the old infrastructure including the office building and the platform.
This also left 45 railway labourers unemployed who used to earn their livelihood by carrying goods.
At the same time, carrying of goods by the railway to and from Rajshahi has also decreased and the businessmen are being compelled to transport their goods in trucks at higher costs.
According to sources, nearly two years ago, Rajshahi railway station was renovated. During the renovation, several railway tracts used for shunting trains were removed and the platform for goods trains was also demolished and the loading and unloading of goods squeezed for space constraint. The goods include cement, fertiliser, wheat, pebbles and boulders, rice, sand, jute and seasonal fruits imported from India.
The traders and businessmen of Rajshahi have demanded that a goods platform be built at Rajshahi station immediately to accelerate the carrying of goods to and from Rajshahi by trains.
