Mike Andrew Cowell, Managing Director of Lafarge Surma distributed the seedlings among the farmers at a ceremony held at the Community Development Center of the company's plant in Chhatak.
Plant Manager Chang Jae Song, senior Lafarge officials and government officials of local administration were present at the programme.
LSC has taken the initiative under the Boro Rice Land Revitalisation Program to help the farmers by excavating land to be transformed into high yield boro-rice land.
These lands were mostly fallow and uncultivated due to the absence of enough moisture forboro rice cultivation. Under the Program, LSC will be assisting the land preparation, providing rice seedlings and fertilisers to the farmers free of cost.
LSC has also recruited facilitators to work with the farmers to ensure the success of the initiative.
Bangladesh's leading cement manufacturer Lafarge Surma Cement has its plant at Chhatak in Sunamganj which is the only dry process fully integrated cement plant in the country. With limestone being brought from its captive mine in Indian State of Meghalaya by a 17 kilometre over land long belt conveyor, it has been producing SUPERCRETE brand of cement.
