Land allotment for Hotel Hilton cancelled

An inter-ministerial meeting Thursday recommended cancellation of land allotment for Hotel Hilton at Hatirjheel area in the city.
The meeting chaired by Law Adviser Barrister Mainul Hosein, however, suggested further discussion with the concerned trade bodies regarding land allotments for the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA).
The communication ministry of the previous government allotted the land in the Begunbari canal at Hatirjheel preserved as water retention basin.
It allocated 4.16 acres of land to Millennium Holding Ltd for construction of Hilton Hotel, in the canal along the Tongi Diversion Road, one acre of land in the canal towards the east of Sonargaon Hotel to the FBCCI and 0.66 decimals of land on the roadside to the BTMA.
Though Bangladesh Railway owns all these lands there was no public bidding for sale or lease, it was alleged.
Apart from constructing the 15-storied Hotel Hilton, the company had a plan to construct a 25-storied office building, four-storied shopping mall, one convention centre and some other establishments like health club, tennis court and swimming pool.
The allotments were made violating the city's master plan. It also violates Railway Land Management Rules of 2006, a senior railway official said.
It also tantamounted to violating the Wetland Protection Act 2000, the official added.
