Land grabbing must be stopped

Wednesday, 5 March 2014

The students and teachers of the Jagannath University (JNU) have been demonstrating for recovery of their 11 dormitories from the illegal occupation of the ruling party leaders since long. The education minister assured to take steps to recover the dormitories, which (JNU) claims to have had under its control nearly three decades ago, from the illegal occupation.
Land grabbing is a very lucrative job of powerful people as land has become dearer than gold in Dhaka city. Common people are helpless against these land sharks, who give a damn to law as they have strong clout with the ruling class. They are ready to resort to any path to get their desired land once they smell any slightest opportunity. The students of JNU have been staging demonstrations since February 12 to press home their rightful demand for getting back the dormitories, including Tibet Hall.
We hope the government will pay heed to their demand and take appropriate action. We also hope the government will take farm action against the influential people trying to become the owners of the landed property in Dhaka with undue favour from and manipulation of the governance system. We only expect a sharp fall in crime related to land grabbing.
