Landless population rises in urban areas by 3.5pc

The yearly per head expenditure on consumer products and services in real terms stood at Tk 14,231 in the outgoing fiscal against Tk 10,800 in 1989-90 registering a cumulative growth of 1.64 per cent, according to the Economic Review 2007.
The expenditure in market value, however, stood at Tk 24,600 in the outgoing fiscal against Tk 7,740 in 1989-90 registering a cumulative growth of 7.04 percent, according to the review.
According to the review, the monthly nominal expenses increased by 31.3 per cent in 2005 compared to 2000. The increase will be 105.37 per cent if comparison is made between 1991 and 2005.
The monthly nominal expense was Tk 7,203 in the national, Tk 6,096 in the rural and Tk 10,463 in the urban levels in 2005. The expenditures were Tk 6,134 in the national, Tk 5,319 in the rural and Tk 8,533 in the urban levels in 2000.
The review that also focused on the poverty on the basis of land possession showed that the number of the landless people in the urban area has increased by 3.5 per cent in between 2000 and 2005.
As per survey of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) in line with high poverty level, the landless people were 36.6 in 2002 that has reached 40.1 per cent in 2005 in the urban area.
The landless people in the all-level and rural area have, however, decreased by 8.9 per cent and 3.1 per cent respectively for the same period.
In 2000, the percentage of the landless people in all level was 48.9 per cent, which has come down to 40.0 per cent in 2005. On the other hand, the landless people in the rural level were 69.7 per cent in 2000 and 66.6 per cent in 2005.
The BBS survey also showed that 3.1 per cent owned 7.5 acre of land, 15.4 per cent possessed 2.5-7.49 acre of land, 22.9 per cent had 1.5-2.49 acre of land, 44.9 per cent owned 0.5-0.49 acre of land and 56.4 per cent possessed less than 0.05 acre of land in 2005.
