Large supply pulls down prices of winter vegetables in city

Prices of vegetables and onion came down sharply due to large supply of fresh winter vegetables to the city's retail markets while prices of other commodities including edible oil, lentil remained almost unchanged at their previous level during the past one week.
Besides, prices of poultry birds and eggs showed a downward trend in the city's retail markets during the past one week due to shortage in supply caused by the news of bird flu that has already affected poultry farms in five districts, traders of the city's different retail markets said.
Poultry birds were selling at Tk 85 -110 per kg on an average at the retail level in the city. A dozen eggs were selling between Tk 63 and Tk 66 on an average in the city's retail markets during the last week.
Prices of vegetables came down by Tk 5- Tk8 per kg on an average at the city's retail markets, traders in the city said.
On Friday, a kilo of lady's finger was selling at Tk 15-20, brinjal Tk 16- 20, papaw Tk 9- 12 and a medium sized cauliflower Tk 10-15, according to the traders in the city's retail markets.
Cucumber was being sold between Tk 12 and Tk18 per kg, tomato Tk 15 and Tk 20 per kg, beans Tk 12 and Tk 28, radish Tk 8 and Tk12, bitter gourd Tk 20 and potato between Tk 15 and Tk18 per kg (old stock) and Tk 18 and Tk 20 (new arrivals). Green chilli was selling at Tk 20 - 25 per kg on an average at the city's kitchen markets.
Prices of onion, both local and imported, declined by Tk 5 -Tk 6 per kg due to huge supply of newly arrival onion at the city's retail level.
Now, a kilo of local onion was selling between Tk 28 and Tk 30 and imported Indian onion between Tk 22 and Tk 24 respectively in the city's retail markets. Garlic was selling between Tk 32 and Tk 35 per kg.
In the retail market beef was selling at Tk 200- 220 per kg and mutton was selling at Tk 320- 340 per kg during the last week.
Traders said prices of local and imported lentil remained unchanged at their previous rates in the city markets. A kilogram of local lentil was selling at Tk 90-Tk 108 while imported lentil between Tk 88 and Tk 90.
In the retail markets, the minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 40- 42 per kg and nazirshail at Tk 36-Tk 44 per kg. Besides, coarse varieties of rice, especially BR-28 and 29 and pari were selling at Tk 28 -32 per kg, Paizam at Tk 30-Tk 32, Swarna at Tk 30 per kg.
At the wholesale level, the minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk1300-1450 per maund (37.300 kg) and the nazirshail variety at Tk 1200- 1450 per maund, according to traders at the city's Babubazar and Nayabazar.
BR-28 was being sold between Tk1100 and Tk 1250 per maund (37.300 kg) while pari between Tk 1050 and Tk 1250 per maund at the wholesale level.
Non-brand edible oil including soybean and super palm were selling between Tk 108-112 per kg and Tk 90- 92 per kg respectively at the retail level.
During the last week, prices of five-litre can of edible oil of different brands ranged between Tk 540 to Tk 565 at the city's kitchen markets.
