Latif, Barua term BNP's hartal baseless

Sunday, 28 November 2010

Jute and Textiles Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui alleged Saturday that the countrywide hartal called by BNP was aimed at protecting Khaleda Zia's house, her sons' illegal wealth and war criminals.
The minister made the allegation while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organised by Bangabandhu Gobeshana-O-Smrity Parishad on "We Want Peace, not Hartal: We Want Extremists and Rajakar-free Bangladesh", in the city, reports BSS.
"Calling hartal is a democratic right of any political party which is also guaranteed in our constitution", he said but added that there must be some democratic norms and practices of calling such hartal.
The minister said a political party attains legitimate rights of calling hartal or floating any other hard political actions when people accept their declared political programmes and objectives.
But the successive hartals called by the BNP this time have no relevance with people's interests or country's development or nation's welfare; it is totally aimed at protecting family interest of BNP chairperson and the perpetrators of War of Liberation, he added.
The minister said so long the defeated forces of the War of Liberation and their new accomplices would remain powerful, there would be no peace, development and progress in the country.
Dhaka Mohanagar Awami League Publication and Publicity Secretary Abdul Haque Sabuj, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Managing Editor Azizul Islam Bhuyian and Bangladesh Muktijoddha Central Command Council Secretary General (welfare and rehabilitation) Monirul Haq Moni attended the function as the special guests.

Meanwhile, Industries Minister Dilip Barua made the allegation while exchanging views with civil society representatives and officials of district administration at Jessore.
The minister described Awami League government as pro-liberation force and said the country witnessed massive development when AL was in power after the liberation war.
The industries minister said there is no instance in the world that any head of the government or Leader of the Opposition resides in cantonment.
Bangladesh set a rare example where opposition chief called hartal to protect her house, he pointed out.
Local lawmaker Khaledur Rahman Titu, district AL president Ali Reza Razu, local press club president Ekram-ud-Dowla, president of Jessore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) Shahidul Islam were present, among others.
