Launch with 500 on board stuck in Chandpur

An overloaded passenger ferry has got stuck on a shoal in Meghna River in Haimchar Upazila in Chandpur district. BIWTA sources said that the launch ‘MV Sattar Khan’ with 500 passengers on board got stuck on a shoal (landmass accumulated for silt deposition) in Meghna River at Gazipurchar in Haimchar around 3:30am on Saturday. Panic is prevailing among the passengers of the triple-decked launch. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Haimchar Police Station and other local administration officials confirmed the incident. When contacted, BIWTC officials at Sadarghat said the launch left Dhaka for Patuakhali on Friday night. Meanwhile, another launch left Chandpur Launch Terminal for Gazipurchar in Haimchar on Saturday morning to rescue the passengers of MV Sattar Khan, according to private TV channels.
