Law and order
Friday, 19 September 2008
THE law and order situation has, once again, become a matter of serious concern. Almost everyday there are news in the media about either killing of traders or looting of money from traders in broad day light in the city. Over the past few days, there has generally been a spurt of criminal activities taking place in different parts of the capital. Such incidents are occurring at a time when the Eid-ul-Fitr is approaching.
Under the state of emergency, there are no political problems such as public rallies, agitational activities or similar programmes to be handled. So it was expected that the police and other security forces would maintain a solid grip on the situation. But that is yet to be seen. If criminal activities mark a surge despite a state of emergency, what would happen when it is lifted?
The police authorities have taken various security measures during the month of Ramadan. The presence of plain-clothes' policemen at markets and shopping malls is part of such measures. This is welcome. Now such police personnel are required in many other places.
The government always says that it will take tough actions against criminals. People will be happy if they see actions, not just warnings.
