Law and order situation deteriorating: BNP
Sunday, 14 June 2015
The BNP on Sunday alleged that the country’s law and order situation is gradually deteriorating for lack of accountability and an elected government.
“Newspapers carried a report that a policewoman was gang-raped by her colleagues. This incident indicates how the law and order situation has turned worse,” said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon.
Addressing a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters, he said, “The worst thing is that female cop was violated by her colleagues.
“It’s a matter of regret when the protector turns villain. This incident also exposes how the social values have degraded.”
Condemning the incident, the BNP leader demanded the government ensure exemplary punishment of those involved in violating the policewoman.
A 25-year-old female constable was reportedly gang-raped by her ex-husband, a police inspector, and his cohorts in the capital’s Khilgaon area on Wednesday night.
“There’s no rule of law and accountability in the country as the current regime is not elected and pro-people one, causing the gradual slide in the law and order situation,” Ripon observed.
The BNP leader slammed the government for its failure to take stern actions against those involved in sexual assaults on women at Dhaka and Jahangirnagar Universities on Pahela Baishakh.
“The culture of impunity now prevails in the country. The offenders are on prowl after committing crimes. The situation will go beyond the control if this culture continues,” he cautioned the government.
Ripon urged the government to take effective measures to improve the law and order situation and check the growing criminal offences likes killing and rape.
Ripon alleged that the ruling party men are being let off the hook after they commit crimes while the opposition leaders and activists are being put into jails for no offence.
Referring to the killing of two people in the city’s Eskaton area purportedly by a ruling party MP’s son, Bakhtiar Alam Rony, he alleged that the government is trying to protect the killer.
The BNP spokesman came down hard on Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu for what he said his continued ‘vindictive’ remarks against party chief Khaleda Zia.
“The government has got an information minister. But, I think, he is more of Khaleda Zia Affairs minister as he always start his speech launching vindictive attacks on the BNP chief,” Ripon added.
