Law will tell polls status of Hasina, Khaleda: Adviser

Sunday, 26 October 2008

The eligibility of the two former prime ministers, Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia, to contest the general elections will be resolved through the judicial process, Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman has reiterated, reports bdnews24.com.
"Their leadership in their respective parties is now established. But whether they will be able to take part in the elections will be decided by legal procedure," Dr Hossain Zillur told reporters in Chittagong Saturday.
"The two are giving directives to their parties. So there is no doubt about their leadership within the parties," he said.
Asked to explain the government's definition of a "qualitative change in politics", the adviser said: "This is not a formula of the government. The people want to progress to a better state through elections."
He had said - prior to government dialogues with the two major parties the previous week - that the aim of further talks was to bring about a "qualitative change in politics".
"We are on the electoral highway. We are now depending on the politicians for future stability," Dr Zillur said.
"People are putting their hopes in the political leaders to take them forward to better conditions through elections."
The whole country was looking to the politicians, the adviser said. "They must pledge political stability and proper running of the country after the elections."
The adviser called on politicians to lead their political agenda with the public's interest at top.
He spoke to reporters while marking the 25th anniversary of the Eye Hospital and Training Centre at Pahartali in Chittagong.
