Laws change over time

Tuesday, 17 May 2011

A law is valid so long as the people abide by it. It isn't, if they don't. There is no earthly reason to assume that the people will take every piece of legislation as an eternal law having validity for all time and all ages irrespective of circumstances. Once there were societies where no law used to be enacted as such, where custom used to rule. And it was customary in savage societies to eat an enemy or enemies. This law or custom is no longer valid. People have become civilised, their mode of work and their social organisation have changed and so are the laws governing such societies. In this context, one may reflect whether certain laws embodying death sentence and enforced in many countries of the world, are civilised laws compatible with human dignity. This is despite the fact that we in Bangladesh are cheering the courts which decree death sentences by hundreds for whatever lofty reason there might be and are clamouring for more deaths.
