Laws to regulate the ship-breaking industry
Monday, 4 January 2010
SHIP-breaking industry in Bangladesh got its momentum last year. Foreign investors and clients showed their keen interest in this sector. The industry has great prospects. A regime of good laws and regulations should, therefore, be framed and strictly implemented to run this sector in a proper manner.
Newspapers recently reported about indiscriminate felling of trees in Cox's Bazar to make ship-breaking yards under the order of some locally powerful people. There was also news of accident and the death of four labourers in one of the ship-breaking yards.
The ship-breaking sector obviously needs to be regulated. We hope the authorities concerned will pay due attention to this sector and do the needful.
