Lax hartal in Sylhet

Monday, 17 November 2014

Sylhet is witnessing a lukewarm strike called in protest of Sylhet Mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury being named in the charge-sheet for the murder of former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria. So far no incidents of violence have been reported during Monday’s dawn to dusk hartal called in the city by an organisation called ‘Amra Sylhetbashi,’ said Sylhet Metropolitan Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Rahmat Ullah. Additional policemen have been deployed at vital points of the city while Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel were out on patrol. Inter-city and local trains have left Sylhet Railway Station and arrived in the north-eastern city from other districts as usual. Flights have left Osmani International Airport on schedule. Most of the banks and other private offices and educational institutions opened in the morning. However, long-route buses have not left the depots but rickshaws and auto-rickshaws were seen moving in the city streets, according to a news agency.
