Laymen should not comment on formalin

Laymen with no knowledge about formalin should refrain from making public comments about the chemical, which has come into limelight for its abuse in foodstuffs, a seminar was told Saturday, according to a news agency.
Those who are not expert on the subject can only cause confusion about the chemical, said chemists at the seminar on “Consumer Products and Chemistry.”
The chemists called for serious studies on the use of chemicals in seasonal fruits and other perishable foods. They suggested the government fix the permissible limits for use of formalin and carbide.
The seminar was organised by Bangladesh Chemical Association (BCA) at BCIC Auditorium in the capital.
Industries Secretary Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah, BCIC chairman M Munsur Ali, BCA president Prof Jasim Uddin spoke on the occasion.
