Leadership of Khaleda, Hasina still acceptable

Wednesday, 26 September 2007

BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain has said, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina should be released to pave the road to democracy, reports UNB.
"It is the desire of the people that the two leaders be released to ease the way for democracy… Their leadership is still acceptable to the people," he told the reporters at his NAM apartment Tuesday.
Appearing critical of the Election Commission (EC), Delwar said, the Commission should be more careful about its jurisdiction, and tell the nation how much work it has done.
"EC must know whether or not all the activities come under its jurisdiction, whether it has coordination of work. As a constitutional body it should be more cautious, which is the nation's expectation," he said.
Delwar mentioned Articles 118 to 123 of the Constitution spelling out the role and function of the EC and its relation with political parties.
Delwar, former chief whip of the last parliament, said the EC is a constitutional body, and people expect that the EC will act neutrally.
Referring to his letter to the EC, Delwar said, the BNP secretary general will not carry his own letter to the Commission. Usually, the office secretary carries letters to the EC.
"When Rizvee Ahmed carried the letter from us, he was not dealt with courtesy. But when Tripti or any reformist goes to the EC, they are given due honour. We do not expect such behaviour from the EC," Delwar said.
Earlier, a delegation of the Zia Parishad, led by its chairman Kabir Murad, and BNP Dhaka city leaders congratulated Delwar for being the new secretary general of BNP.
