A leader's contribution to his society and country is similar to catalyst that can change and transform the overall conditions along with his surroundings, comments a financial expert and renowned business leader.
Leadership quality is very significant for the development of a nation and strengthening the corporate world. Since a leader's responsibility is quite different from general people, he has to show the ideas, values and visions that would be regarded as guidelines for the new generation, says Allen J Pathmarajah, Executive Chairman of AJP Advisers Pte Ltd and Business Thinking Systems (S) Pte Ltd (Business Coaching).
Allen J Pathmarajah is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and Fellow of the Marketing Institute of Singapore.
He was for over 22 years with the Overseas-Chinese Banking Corporation Group ("OCBC"), initially for 10 years as Executive Director of Specialists Services Pte Ltd and concurrently Special Assistant to the Group Chairman. Thereafter for 12 years he was with Great Eastern Life Assurance Co Ltd as General Manager and subsequently as Managing Director until 1996.
He is Chairman and Director of several public-listed and private companies in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. He is also Adjunct Professor at Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University.
Allen was talking to the Financial Express on Friday. He came to Bangladesh on a two day visit and a speaker at second leadership summit 2010 organised by Bangladesh Brand Forum at Radisson Water Garden Hotel in Dhaka.
Allen considers leadership as very important element for emergent on branding and the leader has to be a creative thinker, innovative, possessor of values and morality. He further comments "leadership quality is very important in the business world. A good leader can change the structure and condition of an organisation or any enterprise though the nature and responsibility of a leader might be different in the cases of developed and underdeveloped countries".
According to him, corporate sector's involvement with community development and social advancement programmes mostly depend on their CSR initiatives and implementations. Business leaders must be aware of implementing the CSR in an effective way for the greater welfare of community and the country, and follow the rules and regulations of corporate governance.
Then he stresses on the need to accept the changes be it in politics or in the world economy. "A leader progresses the people from the comfort of today to face the challenges of tomorrow. But the fundamental theory of sustainability includes creation of leaders, striving for excellence, continuous learning and respecting human values", he considers.
He believes business leader should identify the objectives and publicise those to the entire organisation to give the workforce a clear understanding of the organisation's plans.
He welcomes Bangladesh Brand Forum initiatives and the leadership summit -2010. He believes this kind of endeavour will help create awareness in the corporate sector of Bangladesh.
