RAJSHAHI, Oct 11: Leaf-rot disease and stem-borer pest attack have increased in various upazilas of Naogaon and Rajshahi districts with the menace taking a serious turn in Godagari and Tanore upazilas of Rajshahi and Naogaon Sadar Upazila, Mohadebpur, Manda, Badalgachhi and Patnitola upazilas of Naogaon district.
The farmers are spraying and applying granular and liquid insecticide to control the diseases but it doesn't seem to be working.
The farmers complained that the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) had not taken any positive step to check spreading the diseases.
The farmers said that the leaf-rot disease attacked and spread suddenly during the Aman season across Naogaon Sadar, Mohadebpur, Manda, Badalgachhi, Dhanjoil, Bagjana, Chowmasia, Jalalpur of Patnitala Upazila, Laxmipur, Gonashpur, Padmapukur, Azipur, Khazur, Hatur, Chandash, Raiga, Sofapur, Uttargram, Anaitpur, Charagpur and Vimpur on Naogaon district and in the villages of Kaliganj, Talanda, Mathurapur, Mohar, Badhair, Sadipur of Tanore, and Premtoli, Rajabari, Harinbiska and Dumuria villages of Godagari upazila. The paddy plant's leaves are turning yellow and dying because of the blight. In addition, stem-borers have also attacked many paddy fields of the areas. DAE sources said insufficient rainfall has increased the birth of larvae of those insects which are attacking fields after fields.
Abbas Ali, district crop production specialist of DAE Naogaon told this correspondent that inadequate water in the fields and because the farmers did not use potash and balanced fertilizer the diseases spread fast. On the other hand, not using DAE provided seeds are also the cause of the stem borer pest attack. If the diseases are not controlled immediately the harvest will be destroyed.
