FE Report
At least 16 cold storage workers became unconscious in a gas pipeline leakage incident at Sutrapur in the city Wednesday, fire fighters said.
An official of Fire Brigade headquarters told the FE that ammonia gas pipeline of City Cold Store, owned by BNP leader Brig (retd) Hannan Shah, had leaked at about 11:15pm and soon the gas spread to the whole storage.
"Some 16 workers fell unconscious in the toxic smoke caused by the leakage," the officer said adding, "They were rushed to Mitford Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment."
Quoting a victim of the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sutrapur police station Tofazzal Hossain said the accident occurred when a worker hit the gas pipeline while he was carrying a carton of date.
The OC said one of the injured persons was stated to be in a critical condition at hospital. But the Sutrapur police station chief could not say the name of the victim.
A worker of the cold storage, Bazlu, who had been undergoing treatment at Mitford Hospital, told reporters that they could not breathe smoothly due to the toxic smoke. "And then I found myself at the hospital bed," he added.
