Lease system for ferry ghats to be cancelled

The authorities concerned will cancel the lease system for Kawrakandi Ghat in Madaripur, Paturia Ghat in Manikganj and Dulatdia Ghat in Rajbari before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. The decision came from a Shipping Ministry meeting on safe plying of water vessels and ferry services during Eid-ul-Fitr held on Sunday. Chaired by Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, the meeting was attended, among others, by Shipping Secretary Syed Manzurul Islam, BIWTA Chairman Dr M Samsuddoha Khondaker, BIWTC chairman Mizanur Rahman and director general of the Department of Shipping Commodore M Zakiur Rahman Bhuiyan. The meeting said no water vessel could be overloaded with passengers or goods, and launches must depart ghats before crossing the load level during the Eid. It said water vessels cannot take any passenger while moving. The meeting directed the launch owners not to hike fares during the holy festival, according to a news agency.
