Leave past behind, look to future

Tuesday, 6 November 2007

TOO many of our politicians and reactionary forces are always busy mudslinging and pointing out to the past events that took place during the liberation war of Bangladesh. They are always preoccupied in pointing out fingers at which political party members collaborated with the occupation forces and who did not. They go so far as to demand for banning the members of those parties participating in the democratic process. Somehow they are obsessed with the past. They are stuck up in the past and cannot think about the future.
They should ask themselves what they have done for the people of Bangladesh since then. They want to cash in on the past and do not want to move forward. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the Nation, had forgiven all the wrong doings of the people who collaborated with the occupiers under different circumstances.
Nelson Mandela, the great African leader after his people suffering from the worst form of human oppression at the hand of 'white supremacists', forgave his and his nation's oppressor for the greater good of his people. The Prophet of Islam after suffering the worst form of violence on him and his followers for 22 years and forced exile from his land of birth forgave his sworn enemies as he conquered peacefully his homeland. He entered the conquered city not as a conqueror but his head bowed down on his camel as if it was touching the hump with the utmost humility. Why can't we take lessons from history and forgive and be merciful to those who have passed away and the those who are still living for the mistake committed some 36 years ago.
Why their children and their followers should be penalised and soiled with dirt for the past mistakes of their ancestor. People who do not have a plan and vision for the future only stay busy with the past. It is time to shed that ugly hatred and be courageous and morally upright to hold hand in hand with all people of Bangladesh and help shape the future of Bangladesh so that our progenies could proudly remember us.
It is such a small country with the highest population density. Some great people who need sincere support for moving forward to the future are making progress already. So, please shed the revenge mentality and plan to move forward with all onboard.
