Legal notice issued on RU firing

Tuesday, 11 February 2014

A lawyer has issued a legal notice to the government asking it why agitating students of Rajshahi University (RU) were fired upon. Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua sent the notice on Tuesday on behalf of rights activists and teachers including Khushi Kabir, Swapon Adnan, Rafiqullah Khan, Manas Chowdhury, Fahmidul Haque and Tanjimuddin Khan. The notice wanted to know what measures the government had taken before and after the firing at the RU. Barua said “As per law there are many processes that are to be observed before opening fire. In the notice, we have sought to know what process was followed at the RU.” The Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police, Rajshahi Police Commissioner and Rajshahi’s Motihar Police Station OC have been sent the legal notice by post, he said. On Feb 2, police attacked students, who had been demonstrating for days demanding cancellation of hiked fees and evening courses. Over 50 students were injured in the attack. Police baton-charged, lobbed tear gas shells and fired at the demonstrators, according to bdnews24.com.
