Wednesday, 12 November 2014
A Supreme Court (SC) lawyer has sent a legal notice to postpone the execution of death sentence of war crimes death row convict and Jamaat leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman. SC lawyer Abu Bakar Siddique sent the legal notice to the secretary of the ministry of home affairs, law secretary, foreign secretary and top prison authority. It also claimed that the current government is illegal as the ruling party has come to the state power illegally through a non-participatory election and they do not possess the authority to execute the convict. Kamaruzzaman, assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, was sentenced to death by International Crimes Tribunal-2 last year for his crimes against humanity during Bangladesh's independence struggles in 1971. The Appellate Division of the SC on November 3 this year upheld the ICT-2 verdict, according to a news agency.
