Lemon growers making handsome profit in Rangpur region

RANGPUR, Feb 22: Lemon cultivation has helped a good number of growers in different districts in Rangpur division improve their financial condition. A number of farmers of the region have changed their lot by cultivating it in recent years.
According to sources the cultivation of lemon is increasing in the region as the growers are earning handsome profit by cultivating it on their lands. Due to high profit and easy cultivation process a good number of farmers in eight districts under the division are showing their interest in its cultivation, sources further said Borhanuddin a lemon grower of Damudarpur village at Badarganj Upazila in Rangpur told The Financial Express that he has been cultivating lemon commercially for the last 5 years and earning good profit. He has cultivated it on one acre of his land and is earning more profit than other crops. Seeing his success other farmers of his area are showing their enthusiasm about its cultivation, he added.
Mominul of Boiriganj area under Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur district told the FE that he has attained financial solvency through lemon cultivation. He has about 600 lemon trees in his orchard and he has already earned Tk 30,000 by selling it and is optimistic of making more profit during this year. Other farmers could get rid of the curse of poverty by cultivating it on their lands on a large scale, he also said. Due to ongoing countrywide blockade of and shutdown the growers are being deprived of more profit, theyalleged.
Many lemon growers said that the market price and demand for lemon is very good. They cultivate local variety, China variety and Duck Zamir variety lemons. Consumption of the Duck Zamir variety lemon is very much beneficial to the jaundice and cough patients, they added.
According to Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) official sources the cultivation of different varieties of lemon is getting popular in many areas of Rangpur and its adjacent districts. The cultivators are also getting necessary helps from DAE, sources added.
