Lentil, onion, sugar get cheaper, fish, vegetables dearer in city

Prices of lentil, onion and sugar fell while vegetables and fish were up last week, according to sources at different city markets.
The price of local lentil fell in the kitchen market and was selling at Tk 110 per kg against Tk 112 per kg of the previous week while the imported Indian, Nepalese and Turkish varieties were steady at Tk 90-Tk 105 per kg.
Prices of both local and imported onion decreased by Tk 4-Tk 6 per kg at the retail level as the onion of this season was already available in the market, sources said.
The local variety was selling at Tk 24 per kg, down from Tk 28, and the imported Indian variety Tk 18- Tk 20 per kg against Tk 24 per kg.
Prices of rice remained unchanged in the city at the retail level, market sources said Friday.
The minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 42 per kg and Nazirshail Tk 40 -Tk 46 per kg at the retail level.
Course rice including Pari, Swarna and IRRI was selling at Tk 30 per kg, and BR-28 Tk 35 per kg at the retail level.
Prices of ginger also remained steady in the kitchen market. The local variety was selling at Tk 90 per kg and the imported variety Tk 100 per kg.
Non-brand sugar was selling at Tk 50 per kg, down from Tk 55 and sugar of different brands was selling at Tk 56 a kg.
On the other hand, prices of vegetable items witnessed an upward trend in the city's kitchen markets due to the end of the winter season, sources said.
Carrot was selling at Tk 20-Tk 22 against the previous price of Tk 18 per kg, brinjal Tk 25- Tk 30, up from Tk 22-Tk 25 per kg, bean Tk 24-Tk 30, bitter gourd Tk 48, up from Tk 40 per kg, and a medium-size gourd Tk 25-Tk 35.
Green chili was selling at Tk 48 per kg, papaya Tk 12 per kg, lady's finger Tk 32 per kg, tomato Tk 10- Tk 12 per kg and 'Khirai', a variety of small cucumber, Tk 30 per kg.
The price of newly-harvested potato was selling at Tk 10- Tk 11 per kg.
Prices of edible oil remained steady in the city's retail market, the sources said.
The price of the Rupchanda brand edible oil in five-litre containers was selling at Tk 452, Teer Tk 452 and ACI Tk 455 last week.
Non-brand edible oil such as palm oil, super palm and soybean was selling in the range between Tk 80 and Tk 90 per litre.
