Lessons from Ekushey February

Thursday, 21 February 2019

The language martyrs had not only sacrificed their lives on this day in 1952; their sacrifice for the language drove the world to recognise this day as the International Mother Language Day decades later. They were ready to give up the most valuable thing for their mother language. Forced by military and cultural aggression from stronger powers, many nations of the world have lost their own language and culture. But the Bengali nation did not allow this to happen. A group of valiant young men and women rather gave up their lives on this day than to give up on their language and culture.
Though 67 years have passed since that day, the lesson taught by the language martyrs to the nation has helped the latter to stand united against injustice, misrule and aggression by Pakistani forces in 1971.
Bangladesh has come a long way since February 21st, 1952. The lessons of Ekushey February that taught Bangladesh to never bow down will continue to live on in the minds and hearts of this nation as long as it survives.
