Let us make our city clean and green

Monday, 25 December 2017

DHAKA is now a mega city with a population of over 10 million. With an ever increasing population the city is losing its greenery and tidiness. A place which was historically known for lush greenery and natural beauty, has been turning grey with pollution all around. Furthermore, if we look around in our city, we see a lack of discipline and cleanliness arising out of lack of planning. It has earned the unenviable distinction of being one of the most unliveable cities of the world. If preventive steps are not taken immediately, Dhaka is going to be further unliveable and it should not surprise us if it is declared unfit for human habitation in a few decades. Dhaka was established during the Mughal period and it celebrated its 400th anniversary recently. We cannot allow the city to plunge into the darkness of anonymity. As city dwellers we have responsibilities to perform. We have to make the city cleaner and greener. The government should install close circuit cameras in the city so that waste materials are not disposed indiscriminately making the city unclean. Then there is a need for bringing back greenery by planting more trees. If we can do this, we can leave a better place for our future generation.
